What you need to know when Choosing a Motivational Speaker

Let’s talk about choosing a motivational speaker. I’m Brad Montgomery, and I’ve been in this game for over 25 years. I’ve seen it all, and I’m here to give you the inside scoop on what really matters when you’re picking a speaker for your next big event.

Now, you’ve probably seen those lists floating around. You know the ones – “Top 7 Things to Consider When Choosing a Motivational Speaker.” They’re not wrong, but they’re missing the secret sauce. So, let’s break it down, shall we?

  1. Relevance and Expertise: You want someone who knows their stuff. But it’s not just about having the knowledge; it’s about knowing how to serve it up in a way that your audience can digest.
  2. Proven Record: Sure, past performance is important. But don’t just look at the big names they’ve spoken for. Ask about the impact they’ve had. (By the way…I’m intensely proud of my own personal track record. I hope you’ll look at the length of time I’ve been in this speaker business.)
  3. Customization: A cookie-cutter approach won’t cut it. Your event is unique, and your speaker should treat it that way.
  4. Realness: Nobody likes a phony. Look for someone who’s genuine, warts and all. (This is a tough one to know for sure. The best way is to look at their speaker preview video with a REALLY tough skeptical eye.)
  5. Style of Speaking: You want someone who can keep your audience awake, right? A little humor goes a long way.
  6. Post-Event ROI: The speech is just the beginning. What happens after the applause dies down
  7. Guaranteed Results: A motivational speaker who stands behind their work? That’s gold.

Now, these are all great points. But here’s the kicker – the thing that’s missing from every list I’ve ever seen:

Are you choosing a motivational speaker who connect with the audience, and vice versa?

This, my friends, is the secret sauce. You can have the most prepared, relevant, customized pro in the world, but if they can’t connect with your people, it’s all for naught.

I’ve seen speakers with impeccable credentials bomb because they couldn’t read the room. And I’ve seen relatively unknown speakers bring the house down because they knew how to connect.

Connection is about more than just eye contact and asking a few questions. It’s about creating a shared experience. About making every person in that room feel like you’re talking directly to them. It’s about leaving them feeling not just motivated, but understood.

So, how do you gauge this? Well, it’s not easy. You can’t really tell from a website or a demo video. My advice? Talk to the speaker. Get a feel for who they are as a person. Ask them how they approach different audiences. And trust your gut.

Be bold when interviewing your speakers. Ask them: “Do you connect with your audience as a motivational speaker? How will I know that’s true before I sign a contract?” Personally, I’d jump for joy if anybody asked me this question because I have the goods, can prove it with video and referrals, and would never be offended by meeting planners asking great pointed questions!)

Remember, at the end of the day, you’re not just hiring a speaker. You’re creating an experience for your people. And that experience hinges on connection.

So, next time you’re choosing a motivational speaker, by all means, go through your checklist. But don’t forget to ask yourself: Can this person truly connect with my audience? Because if the answer is yes, everything else will fall into place.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some connecting to do. See you on the stage!
