Furthermore, we know from industry studies and surveys that attendees at conventions and meetings crave interactivity, interaction, and networking. They crave community.

Yet ironically, live meetings frequently feature 90 minute presentations. To our presentations. And longer. And to make it worse, a huge percentage of these meetings prefer not to have interactivity.

I have heard this extremely frequently from prospective clients; “Our people want to sit and listen. They don’t like interactivity. And furthermore when they are at a session where they want to learn, the teaching format is contrary to what we know works.

I’ve been an interactive speaker well before it was fashionable. I get people up and moving, talking to each other, laughing, interacting, and meeting new folks at the convention. And I’m telling you… I’ve been doing it for years.

But there is an important detail; interactivity for its own sake is a waste. You really need interactivity AND a facilitated conversation about why that interactivity relates to their goals for the conference. We don’t want people to just play and laugh. We want them to learn – and that learning works best when they are playing and laughing.

For example, something I’ve been doing lately is fairly new. I get the entire audience to create an origami flower. It only takes a couple of minutes, and the audience loves it. They love the fact that they aren’t being lectured to. They love the fact that they are using their hands. They love the fact that they are being creative. And they love the fact that this is a small break in the learning format which helps keep them engaged.

What my meeting planners love is that the interactivity is just the start of a conversation. We talk about why we stopped to make flowers. Why we spent three or four minutes doing something that appears to be off-topic. But then we connect the interactivity to creativity, innovation, and even leadership.

As I motivational speaker I love it because little sections like this keep the learning on high, the fun on very high, and they help me to make my points.

CORPORATE EMCEE: THE ROLES AND WHAT ONE SHOULD KNOW

A corporate emcee, MC or master of ceremonies is a person who officiates at events such as weddings, social functions and other corporate events. The work of an emcee is an exciting one and anyone interested in this line of work should know several things in order to do the job effectively and efficiently. He should be able to know the specific roles related to the job so that he can be able to oversee the progress of the event smoothly and without any hitches. Some of the practices that an emcee should keep in mind are:

  • Know your role

A corporate emcee should be able to recognise his role and be able to carry his responsibilities Brad-Montgomery-Fullaccordingly. Not only should he be aware of his tasks but should also be able to connect his roles with the specific event he’s officiating.

  • Know the speakers and introduce them accordingly

The role of an emcee is not confined to introductions of speakers only. A good corporate emcee should be knowledgeable on the subject matter of the event so that he can connect with the program and even comment appropriately

  • Know the audience

The age group and the type of audience at the event should be kept in mind by an emcee so that he can present the program and any other activities accordingly.

  • Keep the audience energized

A good corporate emcee should be able to read the mood of the audience and be able to make them focused on the event. He should be able to integrate an energizing activity when the attendees become too bored and calm them down when they are too excited.

  • Tie everything together

The role of a corporate emcee is to ensure that all programs at the event progress smoothly and the sequence of the programs is seamless.

When an aspiring emcee keeps all this in mind, then he is sure of delivering a seamless event program and thereby increasing his prospects as a successful emcee.

I love my job for 1 million reasons. Or at least two dozen reasons.… But I rounded up.

One of the absolutely coolest things about being a motivational speaker is that occasionally you get some feedback totally makes your day. What follows is some feedback that made my year.

I worked six months ago for a very cool person in a school district in Wisconsin. They wanted a motivational speaker to prepare their entire staff for the arrival of the students. I think I might have been there one day before the students started school.

I totally remember the event. It was a great audience; I felt good about my presentation.

But check out the email I just got from my meeting planner Laura. It absolutely maybe Tara… Or maybe it was dust in my eyes. I will never tell.

Just thought you would want to know….

As I was walking through the elementary school this morning I came uponmotivational speakera third grade teacher putting up smiley faces over each student’s locker. As I got closer, I realized that each smiley face had a quote from you (Brad Montgomery) at the bottom. Along with your quote, each face had a personalized message for every student on it. When I asked the teacher, “What are you doing?” She said that all of the teachers are creating a personalized smiley face for every student to be hung up before the Christmas concert. Following the concert, the parents are to take them home with them. I thought you would want to see that your message is alive and well here in Medford. (See attached pics)

I still have staff coming up to me and saying, “The speaker you brought in was exactly what I needed!” In fact, one second grade teacher made it a point to tell me that your message had changed her outlook on life. She described herself as a complainer (which was true), and after she heard your message she had decided that she was going to turn over a new leaf and stop complaining about everything. She said she has never felt so UN-stressed as she does this year.

Last week I took a bunch of high school teachers to a conference. One of them stated that she so enjoyed your message that she thought I should continue the theme into January’s inservice. That’s when I had this idea (which of course involves you)! Would you be willing to record a short (2-3 minute) video for me to show to the staff, so that they can be reminded of the “The Happy” that you gave them in August? If so, I I think it would be the extra motivation to get them over the COLD winter months.

A new litmus test for your PowerPoint presentation.

I have very strong feelings about the use of PowerPoint. In my estimation 99.5% of all PowerPoint presentations absolutely blow.

IS&GS National Leadership MeetingI mean they are horrible. Tragic. Embarrassing. But goody for you, based on my 25 years experience as a professional presenter and motivational speaker, I have a couple of tips to ensure you are in that tiny percentage of presenters who can create an interesting, relevant, and fun PowerPoint.

The two things you need to know about PowerPoint are One: you have too many words; and Two: you have too many slides.

First, when I say too many words, I don’t mean just a couple of extra words. I mean you need to erase nearly every word you have. Most of my slides have a maximum of three words on them. A short phrase, a single word.  Often my slides have no words; only a picture.

Slides with minimal words can use a very large font which sets your presentation apart.  Who likes to try to read tiny type covering the entire page, especially if you forgot your reading glasses.  Come on, people!  A lot of us are getting more far-sighted everyday.

More importantly, slides with few words let your audience know where you are in your presentation. They are like punctuation.  A placeholder. The headline. You still have your bullet points in your details.  On your podium!  You are the one who delivers them. Not your computer. If your slides are so detailed that people could read them like an essay in lieu of listening to your presentation, then you’re completely missing the point of the slides. The audience is supposed to be LISTENING!  Not READING!

The same holds true for the number of slides you have in presentation. It’s like packing for a trip.  Prepare your slides, then decrease the amount by perhaps 80%. In my 90 minute motivational keynote I have fewer than 20 slides.

Remember, your audience is there to see YOU. Not your “presentation.” Yes they want you to have valuable content and ideas. But let’s face it— if they wanted JUST the information, they can either buy the book or read an article. Or — heaven forbid — borrow your PowerPoint presentation.

So here’s the bottom line:  erase almost all of your words and almost all of your slides.  Talk more and click that power point remote less.

Of course, with every awesome rule there is an exception. To see if any one slide can meet the exception I’ve come up with a litmus test.

I just did a motivational speech for a group of insurance executives in Georgia, and then a similar speech again for some business people in Denver. After both keynotes I had people come up afterwards and ask for a copy of a particular slide. In both cases it was multiple people asking for the same slide.

The slide is of my Manifesto, and has about 30 words on it. (So as you can see I didn’t just break my rule about very few words per slide; I shattered it.) The fact that people are begging for, not a copy of my entire PowerPoint presentation, but for a copy of that particular slide tells me that this slide is compelling, interesting, and provides value. So now I have a new test for any exception to my very-few-words-per-slide rule.

If I’m going to have lots of words on any particular PowerPoint slide, it needs to have lots of value. So much value that people specifically request a copy. In other words, if you have a Title slide with five Bullets…and nobody cares, comments or notices … That slide sucks.

PowerPoint is an excellent tool for presenters. It can add value and meaning to your speeches, and if you use it right it can even deliver punchlines. So don’t dismiss it. What you need to do is to rethink its content.  Totally.  Now.  Start deleting.  Your presentation will be better, your slides will be more interesting, and your audiences will be thrilled.

I recently worked as a healthcare motivational speaker for 250 nurses in a Colorado hospital. These nurses are doing a lot of amazing things dealing with change… And funny motivational speakerstheir leaders they asked me to come in to encourage them and help put all of the incredible changes our healthcare system in general, and their hospital in particular are going through into perspective.   And to give their nurses some concrete suggestions and tactics to be both better leaders and to better manage change.

We had a great time.  There was a ton of laughter in that room.  But what I think is more important is that all of us left that event with new ideas we will incorporate into our jobs.These are some amazing people that make a difference every single day. With their permission I am sharing a little bit of their email.

It was most definitely epic!  I loved every minute of it!  I will be passing your info along to a couple other organizations in the Northern Colorado area.  The questions were great and it was wonderful for you to have so much “insider” information into our organization.  I bet even Chief Nancy was surprised by how much you knew!  It was perfect!  Our next team meeting is the 3rd week of May….I’ll email you back then with the group’s feedback.

Diana and Ruth are correct.  I was shocked that Diana actually said anything.  She is usually pretty quiet and reserved in large groups, but she must have really felt that the feedback about Ruth was important to share.  It is those “little” moments in our days that can mean so much to patients and co-workers, and we seldom are aware of that.
